Robert’s Story
Recovery Triumph: Drugs and Alcohol
I lived in a Toronto suburb until I was 15, when my parents moved our family north to a town with a population of only 300. I couldn’t handle the culture shock of living in such a small community, so I ran away.
For almost seven years–and in many cities–I lived on the street drinking and drugging. I felt lost in my own skin and thought no one could help me.
One day I’d finally had enough and called a detox facility. I asked for help getting clean and sober so I could live in my own skin. I was accepted into a treatment center and spent three and a half months learning how to live in the community. I really enjoyed the program, which not only kept me sober and clean but also allowed me to return to school. I got my high school diploma, and I now have a diploma in drug and alcohol counseling. I’m working toward my bachelor of social work degree.
I’ve been clean and sober for just over six years. This road was the hardest I had ever traveled until I learned to stop fighting it and to see the gifts of sobriety that I have been blessed with.M
Today I have many successes and awards. My goal is to give back to the community by helping those who can’t help themselves. I even wrote a book, There’s Moore to Life, in the hope of reaching out to those who need help. I believe that sharing my struggles and hopes can help others from taking the wrong road.
