Insurance companies deny inpatient treatment to heroin addicts
When a man in his 20’s sought medical rehabilitation for his heroin addiction, his doctors recommended a supportive 10-day inpatient program, but his insurance company refused to pay. The insurers insisted that the patient must first attempt to stay clean in a less expensive outpatient program, despite what his doctors prescribed. Stories like his are becoming more and more common, as insurance companies work with today’s population of heroin addicts, who are typically younger, more affluent and have stronger support systems than users of the past.
