On the 8th Day of Recovery my new life gave to me: new healthy hobbies
One of the hardest parts of recovery is forming new healthy and sober habits. But new hobbies can help stave off boredom and reduce the risk of relapsing.
Boredom Can Be Dangerous
Too much free time may be dangerous, especially in early recovery. With too much time on your hands you may start feeling nostalgic for all of the fun you had while using. Boredom can lead to feelings of:
- irritability and depression
- comfort eating
- anger
- dissatisfaction with recovery
- loneliness
Benefits of Hobbies
- way to unwind and relax
- meet new people
- develop new skills and discover hidden talents
- chance to be creative
- fun and enjoyable
Finding New Hobbies
- Start by thinking of all of the things you enjoyed before falling into substance use.
- Brainstorm new things you’ve always wanted to try, places you’ve wanted to go, or skills you’d like to learn.
- Don’t be afraid to try new things! If you try out a hobby and dislike it, just try out a new one! Don’t be afraid of failure.
- Try group exercise classes or yoga.
- Volunteering for a good cause is great way develop a new hobby while giving back to your community.
- Spend time with family and friends.

As this year draws to a close we wanted to share with you our version of the 12 Days of Christmas. The 12 Months of Recovery was a video we made last holiday season to categorize some of the ways we can all be thankful for our recovery. Every day leading up to Christmas, we will be sharing the 12 Days of Recovery.
In my first yrs of Recovery, I was given the information to change people places & things… So yes I then needed to find something else that I could put my energies to. It was not so hard, but it was a mind set. The Mind set was not getting use to knowing I wanted to change who where & what I was. I had to think hard, & know that it is worth the fight to Change,, I realized Change is Fluid, it will flow if I let it, If I let Change Flow, it becomes easier. So I find Healthy ways to be me again..Then I become Healthy again….
