On the 4th Day of Recovery my new life gave to me: gratitude aplenty
Those who manage to recover from substance use often have a lot to be thankful for. Living a life filled with gratitude helps us keep a positive outlook on life. Here are some ways to develop gratitude and cultivate thankfulness:
- Appreciate the small things- Did someone open the door for you today? Did someone make you laugh? How did you express your gratitude toward that person?
- Be grateful for your recovery- If you feel grateful for being sober, you’re more likely to stay that way. Being thankful for each sober day helps keep you motivated.
- Help others- Service take a level of humility and humbleness that creates a strong foundation for cultivating gratitude in your life. Reach out and volunteer or become a sponsor.
- Shift your mindset- Focusing on what you’re grateful for is more than a daily task to check off your list; it requires a shift in mindset. Instead of dwelling on the things that addiction has taken away, think about the opportunities recovery has opened up.
- Make a gratitude journal– Keep track of things in your life that you’re thankful for. Write them down each day. On days that you are struggling, go back and re-read old entries to remind yourself of all of the good in your life.
- Embrace imperfection– No one is perfect. Allow yourself and others to make mistakes. Take note of the challenges forgive others and use challenges to make yourself stronger.
