First report on worldwide addiction statistics published

Researchers based in Australia have released a report on addiction statistics from around the world.

Their findings included measures of baselined drug and alcohol use worldwide, including:

• 240 million people are alcohol dependent
• over 1 billion people smoke
• 15 million people use injection drugs, like heroin
