Making Recovery Schools Possible
An addiction counselor in Jacksonville, FL talks about his plan to open a Recovery Schools for youth. His experience has shown him substance abuse in school is a growing concern and he supports this with a several statistics:
1. One of the city’s largest treatment centers provided treatment services to 1,687 juveniles in its 2013-14 fiscal year. Once treatment is complete, these teens generally return to public school.
2. A program for first time offenders of the substance use policy in our schools handles approximately 500 students and families each year. The recidivism rate post-treatment is believed to be in excess of 50%.
3. Of the approximately 4,000 adolescent arrests made by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in 2014, over 51% admitted to recent drug and/or alcohol use.
He hopes to help youth in recovery by providing a supportive learning environment.
