On the 7th Day of Recovery my new life gave to me: addiction-free priorities
Healthy priorities can often fall by the wayside in addiction. So when in recovery, it’s important to set new healthy priorities that are consistent with the values of recovery.
5 Steps to Prioritize Your Recovery
- Reflect– Make a list of what’s important in your life. Whether it’s good health, friends, religion, or new experiences, make sure you identify what matters most to you.
- Plan– The next step is to investigate what it will take. Create goals that feel reachable and doable. Make sure your goals are specific, measurable, and attainable. Set check-points or deadlines to hold yourself accountable. Make sure your goals are leading you in the direction you want to go.
- Ask For Help– Including friends and family members in your decision making process can offer valuable insight and put things in perspective.
- Start Small– Begin with the basics and build from there. Consider Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, create a safe environment first, then cultivate relationships with others, and then finally work towards building the person you want to be. Start small and build up from there. Recovery is a process that doesn’t happen over night.
- Give Back- Finally, give back when you are able; volunteer or share your story. Help a newcomer or become a sponsor.
Your recovery journey is never over and there are always new goals on the horizon. What are you prioritizing this holiday season?
As this year draws to a close we wanted to share with you our version of the 12 Days of Christmas. The 12 Months of Recovery was a video we made last holiday season to categorize some of the ways we can all be thankful for our recovery. Every day leading up to Christmas, we will be sharing the 12 Days of Recovery.
These are cool.. Guess I’ll go start at the beginning…
